1在起初天主創造了天地。 1In the beginning God created heaven, and earth.
2大地還是混沌空虛，深淵上還是一團黑暗，天主的神在水面上運行。 2And the earth was void and empty, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the spirit of God moved over the waters.
3天主說：「有光！」就有了光。 3And God said: Be light made. And light was made.
4天主見光好，就將光與黑暗分開。 4And God saw the light that it was good; and he divided the light from the darkness.
5天主稱光為「晝」，稱黑暗為「夜」。過了晚上，過了早晨，這是第一天。 5And he called the light Day, and the darkness Night; and there was evening and morning one day.
6天主說：「在水與水之間要有穹蒼，將水分開！」事就這樣成了。 6And God said: Let there be a firmament made amidst the waters: and let it divide the waters from the waters.
7天主造了穹蒼，分開了穹蒼以下的水和穹蒼以上的水。 7And God made a firmament, and divided the waters that were under the firmament, from those that were above the firmament, and it was so.
8天主稱穹蒼為「天」，天主看了認為好。過了晚上，過了早晨，這是第二天。 8And God called the firmament, Heaven; and the evening and morning were the second day.
9天主說：「天下的水應聚在一處，使旱地出現！」事就這樣成了。 9God also said: Let the waters that are under the heaven, be gathered together into one place: and let the dry land appear. And it was so done.
10天主稱旱地為「陸地」，稱水匯合處為「海洋」。天主看了認為好。 10And God called the dry land, Earth; and the gathering together of the waters, he called Seas. And God saw that it was good.
11天主說：「在陸地上，土地上要生出青草，結種子的蔬菜，和結果子的果樹，各按照在它內的種子的種類！」事就這樣成了。 11And he said: Let the earth bring forth the green herb, and such as may seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after its kind, which may have seed in itself upon the earth. And it was so done.
12土地就生出了青草，結種子的蔬菜，各按其類，和結果子的樹木，各按照在它內的種子的種類。天主看了認為好。 12And the earth brought forth the green herb, and such as yieldeth seed according to its kind, and the tree that beareth fruit, having seed each one according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.
13過了晚上，過了早晨，這是第三天。 13And the evening and the morning were the third day.
14天主說：「在天空中要有光體，以分別晝夜，作為規定時節和年月日的記號。 14And God said: Let there be lights made in the firmament of heaven, to divide the day and the night, and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days and years:
15要在天空中放光，照耀大地！」事就這樣成了。 15To shine in the firmament of heaven, and to give light upon the earth. And it was so done.
16天主於是造了兩個大光體：較大的控制白天，較小的控制黑夜，並造了星宿。 16And God made two great lights: a greater light to rule the day; and a lesser light to rule the night: and the stars.
17天主將星宿擺列在天空，照耀大地， 17And he set them in the firmament of heaven to shine upon the earth.
18控制晝夜，分別明與暗。天主看了認為好。 18And to rule the day and the night, and to divide the light and the darkness. And God saw that it was good.
19過了晚上，過了早晨，這是第四天。 19And the evening and morning were the fourth day.
20天主說：「水中要繁生蠕動的生物，地面上、天空中要有鳥飛翔！」事就這樣成了。 20God also said: Let the waters bring forth the creeping creature having life, and the fowl that may fly over the earth under the firmament of heaven.
21天主於是造了大魚和所有在水中孳生的蠕動生物，各按其類，以及各種飛鳥，各按其類。天主看了認為好。 21And God created the great whales, and every living and moving creature, which the waters brought forth, according to their kinds, and every winged fowl according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.
22遂祝福牠們說：「你們要孳生繁殖，充滿海洋；飛鳥也要在地上繁殖！」 22And he blessed them, saying: Increase and multiply, and fill the waters of the sea: and let the birds be multiplied upon the earth.
23過了晚上，過了早晨，這是第五天。 23And the evening and morning were the fifth day.
24天主說：「地上要生出生物，各按其類；走獸、爬蟲和地上各種生物，各按其類！」事就這樣成了。 24And God said: Let the earth bring forth the living creature in its kind, cattle and creeping things, and beasts of the earth, according to their kinds. And it was so done.
25天主於是造了地上的生物，各按其類；各種走獸，各按其類；以及地上所有的爬蟲，各按其類。天主看了認為好。 25And God made the beasts of the earth according to their kinds, and cattle, and every thing that creepeth on the earth after its kind. And God saw that it was good.
26天主說：「讓我們照我們的肖像，按我們的模樣造人，叫他管理海中的魚、天空的飛鳥、牲畜、各種野獸、在地上爬行的各種爬蟲。」 26And he said: Let us make man to our image and likeness: and let him have dominion over the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the air, and the beasts, and the whole earth, and every creeping creature that moveth upon the earth.
27天主於是照自己的肖像造了人，就是照天主的肖像造了人：造了一男一女。 27And God created man to his own image: to the image of God he created him: male and female he created them.
28天主祝福他們說：「你們要生育繁殖，充滿大地，治理大地，管理海中的魚、天空的飛鳥、各種在地上爬行的生物！」 28And God blessed them, saying: Increase and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it, and rule over the fishes of the sea, and the fowls of the air, and all living creatures that move upon the earth.
29天主又說：「看，全地面上結種子的各種蔬菜，在果內含有種子的各種果樹，我都給你們作食物； 29And God said: Behold I have given you every herb bearing seed upon the earth, and all trees that have in themselves seed of their own kind, to be your meat:
30至於地上的各種野獸，天空中的各種飛鳥，在地上爬行有生魂的各種動物，我把一切青草給牠們作食物。」事就這樣成了。 30And to all beasts of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to all that move upon the earth, and wherein there is life, that they may have to feed upon. And it was so done.
31天主看了他造的一切，認為樣樣都很好。過了晚上，過了早晨，這是第六天。 31And God saw all the things that he had made, and they were very good. And the evening and morning were the sixth day.

1:1-31
「在起初……」一语，暗示创造万物之时，除天主外，一无所有。「天地」二字此处有宇宙万物之意。作者用诗人的想像力描写天主好似一个工程师，在六天以内创造了万物，到第七天休息。首先所创造的是混沌的无生之物，後将这混沌之物分成天、地、海叁大部分，然後以日月、星辰、草木、飞禽、走兽等来点缀天地海洋。最後天主照自己的肖像造了人。作者从创造混沌之物说起，到创造人，表示人是万物之灵，应效法造物主工作和守安息日。此开宗明义第一章是远古时代的文学杰作，是一篇宗教的重要文告，并不是自然科学的论着。按古代各民族对天地开辟，人类诞生的传说，没有可与创世纪第一章相比拟的。「天主的神」指施生命之神力，但若通观新旧二约的全部启示，此处也指赐生命的「天主圣神」。
1:26-28
「人」按原文有红土或黄土的意思，是说人是属於土的造物。「我们」（26节）按古犹太经师的解释，是指天主和天使，好似天主同天使商量；但有些学者主张为「威严复数」或「议决复数」。教父和神学家多以为此复数暗示天主圣叁的奥理。此说若照启示的演进说是对的。人相似天主是按灵魂说的，相似天主有理智、意志和记忆。论人的肉身，当天主造亚当时，已预见作亚当第二的基督（罗5:14）。「造了一男一女」，指婚姻一夫一妻制和不可分离性（玛19:1-6；拉2:15-16）。天主祝福原祖生育繁殖的话，说明婚姻的首要目的是生养教育子女（8:17；咏127:3-4）。
1:29-31
天主造了原祖，也赐给了他们和他们传生的人类食物，并将普世交给他们统治。所造的万物样样都好，是说万物都合天主的旨意，都为他所喜爱。参阅咏19:1-6; 104; 145; 148; 150。
