1上主對亞巴郎說：「離開你的故鄉、你的家族和父家，往我指給你的地方去。 1And the Lord said to Abram: Go forth out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and out of thy father's house, and come into the land which I shall shew thee.
2我要使你成為一個大民族，我必祝福你，使你成名，成為一個福源。 2And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and magnify thy name, and thou shalt be blessed.
3我要祝福那祝福你的人，咒罵那咒罵你的人；地上萬民都要因你獲得祝福。」 3I will bless them that bless thee, and curse them that curse thee, and IN THEE shall all the kindred of the earth be blessed:
4亞巴郎遂照上主的吩咐起了身，羅特也同他一起走了。亞巴郎離開哈蘭時，已七十五歲。 4So Abram went out as the Lord had commanded him, and Lot went with him: Abram was seventy-five years old when he went forth from Haran.
5他帶了妻子撒辣依、他兄弟的兒子羅特和他在哈蘭積蓄的財物，獲得的僕婢，一同往客納罕地去，終於到了客納罕地。 5And he took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son, and all the substance which they had gathered, and the souls which they had gotten in Haran: and they went out to go into the land of Chanaan. And when they were come into it,
6亞巴郎經過那地，直到了舍根地摩勒橡樹區；當時客納罕人尚住在那地方。 6Abram passed through the country into the place of Sichem, as far as the noble vale: now the Chanaanite was at that time in the land.
7上主顯現給亞巴郎說：「我要將這地方賜給你的後裔。」亞巴郎就在那裡給顯現於他的上主，築了一座祭壇。 7And the Lord appeared to Abram, and said to him: To thy seed will I give this land. And he built there an altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him.
8從那裡又遷移到貝特耳東面山區，在那裡搭了帳幕，西有貝特耳，東有哈依；他在那裡又為上主築了一座祭壇，呼求上主的名。 8And passing on from thence to a mountain, that was on the east side of Bethel, he there pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west, and Hai on the east; he built there also an altar to the Lord, and called upon his name.
9以後亞巴郎漸漸移往乃革布區。 9And Abram went forward, going, and proceeding on to the south.
10其時那地方起了饑荒，亞巴郎遂下到埃及，寄居在那裡，因為那地方饑荒十分嚴重。 10And there came a famine in the country; and Abram went down into Egypt, to sojourn there: for the famine was very grievous in the land.
11當他要進埃及時，對妻子撒辣依說：「我知道你是個貌美的女人； 11And when he was near to enter into Egypt, he said to Sarai his wife: I know that thou art a beautiful woman:
12埃及人見了你，必要說：這是他的妻子；他們定要殺我，讓你活著。 12And that when the Egyptians shall see thee, they will say: She is his wife: and they will kill me, and keep thee.
13所以請你說：你是我的妹妹，這樣我因了你而必獲優待，賴你的情面，保全我的生命。」 13Say, therefore, I pray thee, that thou art my sister: that I may be well used for thee, and that my soul may live for thy sake.
14果然，當亞巴郎一到了埃及，埃及人就注意了這女人實在美麗。 14And when Abram was come into Egypt, the Egyptians saw the woman that she was very beautiful.
15法郎的朝臣也看見了她，就在法郎前讚她美麗；這女人就被帶入法郎的宮中。 15And the princes told Pharao, and praised her before him: and the woman was taken into the house of Pharao.
16亞巴郎因了她果然蒙了優待，得了些牛羊、公驢、僕婢、母驢和駱駝。 16And they used Abram well for her sake. And he had sheep and oxen, and he asses, and men servants and maid servants, and she asses, and camels.
17但是，上主為了亞巴郎的妻子撒辣依的事，降下大難打擊了法郎和他全家。 17But the Lord scourged Pharao and his house with most grievous stripes for Sarai, Abram's wife.
18法郎遂叫亞巴郎來說：「你對我作的是什麼事？為什麼你沒有告訴我，她是你的妻子？ 18And Pharao called Abram, and said to him: What is this that thou hast done to me? Why didst thou not tell me that she was thy wife?
19為什麼你說：她是我的妹妹，以致我娶了她做我的妻子？現在，你的妻子在這裡，你帶她去罷！」 19For what cause didst thou say, she was thy sister, that I might take her to my wife? Now, therefore, there is thy wife, take her, and go thy way.
20法郎於是吩咐人送走了亞巴郎和他的妻子以及他所有的一切。 20And Pharao gave his men orders concerning Abram: and they led him away, and his wife, and all that he had.

12:1-9
亚巴郎因坚信天主的话，遵命起身，遂蒙了天主祝福，使他的子孙成为一大民族，而且因了他子孙中所出生的默西亚，为那些效法他信德的人，亚巴郎成了他们幸福的泉源，因为他保存了真宗教和对默西亚的希望，因而万民藉默西亚得到了救赎，即如圣保禄所说：「亚巴郎的祝福在基督耶稣内能及於万民」（迦3:14；希11:8-12）。
12:10-17
亚巴郎为保护自己的生命财产的所言所行，虽不可取法，但由此可知，圣经中不拘善恶都记载下来，连圣祖的毛病罪过都一一记叙；而且圣经不但对启示的道理有所进展，而且对道德的概念也有所演进。
