1依撒格叫了雅各伯來，祝福他，吩咐他說：「你不要娶客納罕女人為妻。 1And Isaac called Jacob, and blessed him, and charged him, saying: Take not a wife of the stock of Chanaan:
2你應起身往帕丹阿蘭你外祖父貝突耳家去，在那裡娶你舅父拉班的女兒為妻。 2But go, and take a journey to Mesopotamia of Syria, to the house of Bathuel thy mother's father, and take thee a wife thence of the daughters of Laban thy uncle.
3願全能的天主祝福你，使你生育繁殖，成為一大家族。 3And God almighty bless thee, and make thee to increase, and multiply thee: that thou mayst be a multitude of people.
4願天主將亞巴郎的祝福賜與你和你的後裔，使你承受你所住的地方，即天主賜與亞巴郎的土地作為產業。」 4And give the blessings of Abraham to thee, and to thy seed after thee: that thou mayst possess the land of thy sojournment, which he promised to thy grandfather.
5依撒格就這樣打發了雅各伯往帕丹阿蘭，投往阿蘭人貝突耳的兒子拉班，即雅各伯和厄撒烏的母親黎貝加的哥哥那裡去了。 5And when Isaac had sent him away, he took his journey and went to Mesopotamia of Syria to Laban the son of Bathuel the Syrian, brother to Rebecca his mother.
6厄撒烏見依撒格祝福了雅各伯，打發他到帕丹阿蘭去，在那裡娶妻；祝福他時還吩咐他說：「不要娶客納罕女人為妻。」 6And Esau seeing that his father had blessed Jacob, and had sent him into Mesopotamia of Syria, to marry a wife thence; and that after the blessing he had charged him, saying: Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Chanaan:
7厄撒烏見雅各伯聽從父母的命，往帕丹阿蘭去了， 7And that Jacob obeying his parents was gone into Syria:
8便明白父親依撒格不喜歡客納罕女子。 8Experiencing also that his father was not well pleased with the daughters of Chanaan:
9所以他去了依市瑪耳那裡，除自己所有的兩個妻子外，又娶了亞巴郎之子依市瑪耳的女兒乃巴約特的妹妹瑪哈拉特為妻。 9He went to Ismael, and took to wife, besides them he had before, Maheleth the daughter of Ismael, Abraham's son, the sister of Nabajoth.
10雅各伯離開貝爾舍巴，往哈蘭去了。 10But Jacob being departed from Bersabee, went on to Haran.
11他來到一個地方，因太陽已落，就在那裡過宿，隨地拿了一塊石頭，放在頭底下，就在那地方躺下睡了。 11And when he was come to a certain place, and would rest in it after sunset, he took of the stones that lay there, and putting under his head, slept in the same place.
12他作了一夢：見一個梯子直立在地上，梯頂與天相接；天主的使者在梯子上，上去下來。 12And he saw in his sleep a ladder standing upon the earth, and the top thereof touching heaven: the angels also of God ascending and descending by it;
13上主立在梯子上說：「我是上主，你父亞巴郎的天主，依撒格的天主。我要將你所躺的地方，賜給你和你的後裔。 13And the Lord leaning upon the ladder, saying to him: I am the Lord God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac; the land, wherein thou sleepest, I will give to thee and to thy seed.
14你的後裔要多得如地上的灰塵；你要向東西南北擴展，地上的萬民都要因你和你的後裔蒙受祝福。 14And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth: thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and IN THEE and thy seed all the tribes of the earth SHALL BE BLESSED.
15看我與你同在；你不論到那裡，我必護佑你，領你回到此地。我決不離棄你，直到我實踐了我對你所許的。」 15And I will be thy keeper whithersoever thou goest, and will bring thee back into this land: neither will I leave thee, till I shall have accomplished all that I have said.
16雅各伯一覺醒來，說：「上主實在在這地方，我竟不知道。」 16And when Jacob awaked out of sleep, he said: Indeed the Lord is in this place, and I knew it not.
17他又滿懷敬畏地說：「這地方多麼可畏！這裡不是別處，乃是天主的住所，上天之門。」 17And trembling he said: How terrible is this place! this is no other but the house of God, and the gate of heaven.
18雅各伯清早一起來，就把那塊放在頭底下的石頭，立作石柱，在頂上倒了油， 18And Jacob, arising in the morning, took the stone, which he had laid under his head, and set it up for a title, pouring oil upon the top of it.
19給那地方起名叫貝特耳，原先那城名叫路次。 19And he called the name of the city Bethel, which before was called Luza.
20然後雅各伯許願說：「若是天主與我同在，在我所走的路上護佑我，賜我豐衣足食， 20And he made a vow, saying: If God shall be with me, and shall keep me in the way by which I walk, and shall give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on,
21使我平安回到父家，上主實在當是我的天主。 21And I shall return prosperously to my father's house: the Lord shall be my God:
22我立作石柱的這塊石頭，必要成為天主的住所；凡你賜與我的，我必給你奉獻十分之一。」 22And this stone, which I have set up for a title, shall be called the house of God: and of all things that thou shalt give to me, I will offer tithes to thee.

本章紧接上章末节述黎贝加说服了依撒格，让雅各伯到舅家去娶亲，且叫他祝福雅各伯，求天主赐给他许与亚巴郎的地方。
28:6-9
厄撒乌娶依市玛耳的女儿为妻，原是他的好心，愿意得父母的欢心。在33:4-9所载，也是他对雅各伯不念旧恶的表示。
28:10-22
此段在宗教史上非常重要，要义不外是：一、天主的显现；二、天主重许向圣祖的许诺(12:2,3; 13:14-17; 22:17; 26:4,24)；叁、雅各伯立的记念神视的石柱；四、他所许的愿；五、所奉献的什一之物。雅各伯神目所见的梯子上，有天使上下，或表示天主打发天使对万物的照顾（犹太人斐罗主此说）；或照耶稣所说，是指天主圣子降生的奥迹（若1:51）；降生成人的圣子耶稣作了人类的惟一中保，人惟有靠他才能接近天主。贝特耳（意即天主的殿）在民长时代是祈祷求恩的圣地（民20:18-26；撒上10:3），约柜曾一度存在这里（民20:27）。王国分裂後，北国的雅洛贝罕在此地建了一座圣所，并在此地造了一头金牛，因此先知们严禁人民前往（亚4:4；欧10:5）。日後约史雅王将此地的祭坛拆毁焚烧了（列下23:15）。
