Job
Chapter 1
1 In the land of Uz 1 there was a blameless and upright man named Job, who feared God and avoided evil.
从前在胡兹地方，有一个人名叫约伯，为人十全十美，生性正直，敬畏天主，远离邪恶。
2 2 Seven sons and three daughters were born to him;
他生了七个儿子，三个女儿。
3 3 and he had seven thousand sheep, three thousand camels, five hundred yoke of oxen, five hundred she-asses, and a great number of work animals, so that he was greater than any of the men of the East.
家畜有七千只羊，三千骆驼，五百对牛，五百母驴，且有很多仆人。此人是当时东方人民中最伟大的人物。
4 His sons used to take turns giving feasts, sending invitations to their three sisters to eat and drink with them.
他的每个儿子，按日轮流在家中设宴，且派人邀请他们的三个姊妹来一同宴饮。
5 And when each feast had run its course, Job would send for them and sanctify them, rising early and offering holocausts for every one of them. For Job said, ＂It may be that my sons have sinned and blasphemed God in their hearts.＂ This Job did habitually.
及至宴饮的日子轮流一周，约伯总是派人召集他们来圣洁他们，清早起来照子女的数目，献上全燔祭品说：＂恐怕我的儿子犯了罪，心中诅咒了天主。＂约伯常常如此行事。
6 4 One day, when the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, Satan also came among them.

7 And the LORD said to Satan, ＂Whence do you come?＂ Then Satan answered the LORD and said, ＂From roaming the earth and patrolling it.＂
上主问撒殚说：＂你从那里来？＂撒殚回答上主说：＂我走遍了世界，周游了各地回来。＂
8 And the LORD said to Satan, ＂Have you noticed my servant Job, and that there is no one on earth like him, blameless and upright, fearing God and avoiding evil?＂
上主对撒殚说：＂你曾留心注意到我的仆人约伯没有？因为世上没有一个象他那样十全十美，生性正直，敬畏天主，远避邪恶的人。＂
9 But Satan answered the LORD and said, ＂Is it for nothing that Job is God-fearing?
撒殚回答上主说：＂约伯那里是无缘无故敬畏天主的呢？
10 Have you not surrounded him and his family and all that he has with your protection? You have blessed the work of his hands, and his livestock are spread over the land.
你不是四面保护他、他的家庭和他所有的一切么？并且凡是他亲手做的，你都降福了；你使他的牲畜在地上繁殖增多。
11 But now put forth your hand and touch anything that he has, and surely he will blaspheme you to your face.＂
但是你若伸手打击他所有的一切，他必定当面诅咒你。＂
12 And the LORD said to Satan, ＂Behold, all that he has is in your power; only do not lay a hand upon his person.＂ So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD.
上主对撒殚说：＂看，他所有的一切，都随你处理，只是不要伸手加害他的身体。＂撒殚遂离开天主走了。
13 And so one day, while his sons and his daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their eldest brother,
有一天，他的儿子同他的女儿，正在长兄家里欢宴饮酒的时候，
14 a messenger came to Job and said, ＂The oxen were plowing and the asses grazing beside them,
有个带信的人跑来向约伯说：＂牛正在耕田，母驴在一旁吃草的时候，
15 5 and the Sabeans carried them off in a raid. They put the herdsmen to the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.＂
舍巴人突然闯来将牲口抢了去，用刀将那些仆人杀了，只有我一人逃脱，来向你报告。＂
16 6 While he was yet speaking, another came and said, ＂Lightning has fallen from heaven and struck the sheep and their shepherds and consumed them; and I alone have escaped to tell you.＂
这人还在报告时，另一个人跑来说：＂天主的火由天降下，将羊群和仆人都烧死了，只有我一人逃脱，来向你报告。＂
17 While he was yet speaking, another came and said, ＂The Chaldeans formed three columns, seized the camels, carried them off, and put those tending them to the sword, and I alone have escaped to tell you.＂
这人还在报告时，另一个人跑来说：＂加色丁人分成三队闯入骆驼群，将骆驼抢走了，用刀将仆人杀了，只有我一人逃脱，来向你报告。＂
18 While he was yet speaking, another came and said, ＂Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in the house of their eldest brother,
这人还在报告时，另一个人跑来说：＂你的儿女正在长兄家宴饮的时候，
19 when suddenly a great wind came across the desert and smote the four corners of the house. It fell upon the young people and they are dead; and I alone have escaped to tell you.＂
忽然从旷野那边吹来一阵飓风，刮倒了房屋的四角，压死了你的孩子，只有我一人幸免，来向你报告。＂
20 Then Job began to tear his cloak and cut off his hair. He cast himself prostrate upon the ground,
约伯就起来，撕裂了自己的外氅，剃去头发，俯伏在地叩拜，
21 7 and said, ＂Naked I came forth from my mother's womb, and naked shall I go back again. The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away; blessed be the name of the LORD!＂
说＂我赤身脱离母胎，也要赤身归去；上主赐的，上主收回。愿上主的名常受到赞美！＂
22 In all this Job did not sin, nor did he say anything disrespectful of God.
就这一切事而论，约伯并没有犯罪，也没有说抱怨天主的话。

Chapter 2
1 Once again the sons of God came to present themselves before the LORD, and Satan also came with them.
又有一天，天主的众子都前来侍立在上主面前，撒殚也夹在他们当中，侍立在上主面前。
2 And the LORD said to Satan, ＂Whence do you come?＂ And Satan answered the LORD and said, ＂From roaming the earth and patrolling it.＂
上主向撒殚说：＂你从那里来？＂撒殚回答上主说：＂我走遍了世界，周游了各地回来。＂
3 And the LORD said to Satan, ＂Have you noticed my servant Job, and that there is no one on earth like him, faultless and upright, fearing God and avoiding evil? He still holds fast to his innocence although you incited me against him to ruin him without cause.＂
上主对撒殚说：＂你曾留心注意到我的仆人约伯吗？世上没有一个象他那样十全十美，生性正直，敬畏天主，远避邪恶的人。你虽然激动我加害他，无端叫他倾家荡产，但他依然保持自己的完善。＂
4 1 And Satan answered the LORD and said, ＂Skin for skin! All that a man has will he give for his life.
撒殚回答上主说：＂那只不过是以皮换皮罢了！人都肯舍弃所有，去保全自己的性命。
5 But now put forth your hand and touch his bone and his flesh, and surely he will blaspheme you to your face.＂
但是，你若伸手打击他的骨和肉，他必定当面诅咒你。＂
6 And the LORD said to Satan, ＂He is in your power; only spare his life.＂
上主向撒殚说：＂看，任你处置他，只要保全他的性命。＂
7 So Satan went forth from the presence of the LORD and smote Job with severe boils from the soles of his feet to the crown of his head.
撒殚从上主那里出来，就使约伯从足踵到头顶都长了毒疮。
8 And he took a potsherd to scrape himself, as he sat among the ashes.
约伯坐在灰土堆中，用瓦片刮身。
9 2 Then his wife said to him, ＂Are you still holding to your innocence? Curse God and die.＂
他的妻子向他说：＂你还保持你的完善吗？你倒不如诅咒天主，死了算了！＂
10 But he said to her, ＂Are even you going to speak as senseless women do? We accept good things from God; and should we not accept evil?＂ Through all this, Job said nothing sinful.
约伯向她说：＂你说话，真象一个胡涂女人！难道我们只由天主那里接受恩惠，而不接受灾祸吗？＂就这一切事而论，约伯没有犯失言的过错。
11 3 Now when three of Job's friends heard of all the misfortune that had come upon him, they set out each one from his own place: Eliphaz from Teman, Bildad from Shuh, and Zophar from Naamath. They met and journeyed together to give him sympathy and comfort.
约伯的三位朋友，特曼人厄里法次、叔亚人彼耳达得、纳阿玛人左法尔，听说他遭遇了灾祸，就各从本地起程，来到一起，去慰问他、劝勉他，
12 But when, at a distance, they lifted up their eyes and did not recognize him, they began to weep aloud; they tore their cloaks and threw dust upon their heads.
他们从远处举目一望，已认不得他，就放声大哭，撕破了自己的外衣，把灰扬起，落在自己头上。
13 Then they sat down upon the ground with him seven days and seven nights, but none of them spoke a word to him; for they saw how great was his suffering.
他们于是同他在灰土中，坐了七天七夜，因见他受苦太大，没有人敢向他说一句话。

1 [4] Skin for skin: an expression which, as applied to Job, means that he has borne his suffering patiently thus far only because he seeks to avoid greater suffering and to receive greater favors from God.
2 [9] Curse God and die: you have nothing to hope for from God and therefore nothing to live for.
3 [11] The names of Job's friends suggest Edomite origin. The Edomites (Obadiah 1:8-9) and more specifically the Temanites (Jeremiah 49:7) enjoyed a reputation for wisdom.

Chapter 3
1 After this, Job opened his mouth and cursed his day.
此后约伯开口诅咒自己的生日。
2 Job spoke out and said:
约伯开始说：
3 Perish the day on which I was born, the night when they said, ＂The child is a boy!＂
愿我诞生的那日消逝，愿报告＂怀了男胎＂的那夜灭亡。
4 May that day be darkness: let not God above call for it, nor light shine upon it!
愿那日成为黑暗，愿天主从上面不再寻觅它，再没有光烛照它。
5 May darkness and gloom claim it, clouds settle upon it, the blackness of night affright it!
愿黑暗和阴影玷污它，浓云遮盖它，白昼失光的晦暗惊吓它。
6 May obscurity seize that day; let it not occur among the days of the year, nor enter into the count of the months!
愿那夜常为黑暗所制，不让它列入年岁中，不让它算在月分里。
7 May that night be barren; let no joyful outcry greet it!
愿那夜孤寂茕独，毫无欢呼之声
8 1 Let them curse it who curse the sea, the appointed disturbers of Leviathan!
愿那诅咒白日者，有术召唤海怪者，前来诅咒那夜。
9 May the stars of its twilight be darkened; may it look for daylight, but have none, nor gaze on the eyes of the dawn,
愿晨星昏暗，期待光明而光明不至，也不见晨光熹微，
10 Because it kept not shut the doors of the womb to shield my eyes from trouble!
因为它没有关闭我母胎之门，遮住我眼前的愁苦。
11 Why did I not perish at birth, come forth from the womb and expire?
我为何一出母胎没有立即死去？为何我一离母腹没有断气？
12 Wherefore did the knees receive me? Or why did I suck at the breasts?
为何两膝接住我？为何两乳哺养我？
13 For then I should have lain down and been tranquil; had I slept, I should then have been at rest
不然现今我早已卧下安睡了，早已永眠获得安息了，
14 With kings and counselors of the earth who built where now there are ruins
与那些为自己建陵墓的国王和百官，
15 Or with princes who had gold and filled their houses with silver.
与那些金银满堂的王侯同眠；
16 2 Or why was I not buried away like an untimely birth, like babes that have never seen the light?
或者象隐没的流产儿，象未见光明的婴孩；
17 3 There the wicked cease from troubling, there the weary are at rest.
在那里恶人停止作乱，在那里劳悴者得享安宁；
18 There the captives are at ease together, and hear not the voice of the slave driver.
囚徒相安无事，再不闻督工的呼叱声，
19 Small and great are there the same, and the servant is free from his master.
在那里大小平等，奴隶脱离主人。
20 Why is light given to the toilers, and life to the bitter in spirit?
为何赐不幸者以光明，赐心中忧苦者以生命？
21 They wait for death and it comes not; they search for it rather than for hidden treasures,
这些人渴望死，而死不至；寻求死亡胜于宝藏，
22 Rejoice in it exultingly, and are glad when they reach the grave:
见到坟墓，感觉欢乐，且喜乐达于极点！
23 Men whose path is hidden from them, and whom God has hemmed in!
人的道路，既如此渺茫，天主为何赐给他生命，又把他包围？
24 For sighing comes more readily to me than food, and my groans well forth like water.
叹息成了我的食物，不停哀叹有如流水。
25 For what I fear overtakes me, and what I shrink from comes upon me.
我所畏惧的，偏偏临于我身；我所害怕的，却迎面而来。
26 I have no peace nor ease; I have no rest, for trouble comes!
我没有安宁，也没有平静，得不到休息，却只有烦恼。

Chapter 4
1 Then spoke Eliphaz the Temanite, who said:
特曼人厄里法次开始说：
2 If someone attempts a word with you, will you mind? For how can anyone refrain from speaking?
人若和你讲话，你能忍受吗？但谁又能忍住不说？
3 Behold, you have instructed many, and have made firm their feeble hands.
看，你曾劝戒过许多人，坚固过软弱无能的人；
4 Your words have upheld the stumbler; you have strengthened his faltering knees.
你的话扶起了跌倒的人，坚固了膝弱无力的人；
5 But now that it comes to you, you are impatient; when it touches yourself, you are dismayed.
但是现今灾祸一临于你，你就萎靡不振；一接触你，你就沮丧失意。
6 Is not your piety a source of confidence, and your integrity of life your hope?
你敬畏天主之情，岂不是你的依靠？你完善的行为，岂不是你的希望？
7 Reflect now, what innocent person perishes? Since when are the upright destroyed?
请想：那有无辜者丧亡？那有正直者消逝？
8 As I see it, those who plow for mischief and sow trouble, reap the same.
照我所见：那播种邪恶的，必收邪恶；散布毒害的，必收毒害。
9 By the breath of God they perish, and by the blast of his wrath they are consumed.
天主一嘘气，他们即灭亡；一发怒气，他们即消失。
10 1 Though the lion roars, though the king of beasts cries out, yet the teeth of the young lions are broken;
狮吼豹嗥完全止息，幼狮的牙齿也被打碎；
11 The old lion perishes for lack of prey, and the cubs of the lioness are scattered.
壮狮因缺猎物而灭绝，牝狮幼子各自东西离散。
12 2 For a word was stealthily brought to me, and my ear caught a whisper of it.
我窃听到一句话，我耳听见细语声。
13 In my thoughts during visions of the night, when deep sleep falls on men,
当人沉睡时，夜梦多幻象；
14 Fear came upon me, and shuddering, that terrified me to the bones.
我恐怖战栗，全身骨头发抖。
15 Then a spirit passed before me, and the hair of my flesh stood up.
寒风掠过我面，使我毛发悚然。
16 It paused, but its likeness I could not discern; a figure was before my eyes, and I heard a still voice:
他停立不动，但我不能辨其形状；我面前出现形影，我听见细微的声音：
17＂Can a man be righteous as against God? Can a mortal be blameless against his Maker?
人岂能在天主前自以为义？在造他者前，自以为洁？
18 Lo, he puts no trust in his servants, and with his angels he can find fault.
看，他的仆役，他还不信；他的使者，他还归罪，
19 How much more with those that dwell in houses of clay, whose foundation is in the dust, who are crushed more easily than the moth!
何况那以泥屋为居所，以尘土为基础的人！他们为人践踏，有如蠹虫；
20 Morning or evening they may be shattered; with no heed paid to it, they perish forever.
晨昏间即化为齑粉，永远消亡而无人回顾。
21 The pegs of their tent are plucked up; they die without knowing wisdom.＂
幕索已自断，他们就因缺少智慧而死亡？

Chapter 5
1 Call now! Will anyone respond to you? To which of the holy ones will you appeal?
任你呼求，看有谁答应你？诸圣者中，看你转向那一位？
2 Nay, impatience kills the fool and indignation slays the simpleton.
的确，忧愤杀死愚人，怒火使痴者丧生。
3 I have seen a fool spreading his roots, but his household suddenly decayed.
我知道：愚人一根深蒂固，他的居所即被诅咒；
4 1 His children shall be far from safety; they shall be crushed at the gate without a rescuer.
他的子女，无人支持，在城门前被践踏，无人救护。
5 What they have reaped the hungry shall eat up; (or God shall take it away by blight;) and the thirsty shall swallow their substance.
他们收获的，饥饿者来吃；且将剩余的，抢去储存；他们的财富，为口渴者喝尽。
6 For mischief comes not out of the earth, nor does trouble spring out of the ground;
因为灾祸不是由土中而来，忧患不是由地中而生；
7 2 But man himself begets mischief, as sparks fly upward.
而是人自寻苦恼，如雏鹰自会飞翔。
8 In your place, I would appeal to God, and to God I would state my plea.
如果是我，我必投奔天主，向天主陈诉我的案情。
9 Guide me in your justice because of my foes; make straight your way before me.
他所作的大事，高深莫测；他所行的奇事，不可胜数：
10 He gives rain upon the earth and sends water upon the fields;
他使雨落在地上，引水滋润郊田；
11 He sets up on high the lowly, and those who mourn he exalts to safety.
使卑微的人高升，使受苦的人获得救助；
12 He frustrates the plans of the cunning, so that their hands achieve no success;
粉碎狡猾人的计谋，使他们的作为一无所成；
13 He catches the wise in their own ruses, and the designs of the crafty are routed.
以智者的计谋捕捉智者，使奸猾人的策划即时成空；
14 They meet with darkness in the daytime, and at noonday they grope as though it were night.
他们白日遇到黑暗，正午摸索如在夜间；
15 But the poor from the edge of the sword and from the hand of the mighty, he saves.
他搭救被剥削者脱离人口，挽救穷人摆脱强暴的手。
16 Thus the unfortunate have hope, and iniquity closes her mouth.
如此，贫苦的人获得希望，邪恶将闭口无言。
17 Happy is the man whom God reproves! The Almighty's chastening do not reject.
的确，天主所惩戒的人是有福的：全能者的训戒，你不可忽视。
18 For he wounds, but he binds up; he smites, but his hands give healing.
因为他打伤了，而又包扎伤口；他击碎了，而又亲手治疗。
19 4 Out of six troubles he will deliver you, and at the seventh no evil shall touch you.
你六次遭难，他次次拯救；到第七次，灾难不会临于你。
20 In famine he will deliver you from death, and in war from the threat of the sword;
饥馑中，他必救你不死；战争中，必使你得免刀剑。
21 From the scourge of the tongue you shall be hidden, and shall not fear approaching ruin.
唇枪舌剑，你必能躲藏；大难来临，你不必张惶；
22 At destruction and want you shall laugh; the beasts of the earth you need not dread.
对大难和饥荒，你可置之一笑；对地上的野兽，也不用惊惶。
23 You shall be in league with the stones of the field, and the wild beasts shall be at peace with you.
你将与田野的顽石立约，旷野的猛兽必与你和好。
24 And you shall know that your tent is secure; taking stock of your household, you shall miss nothing.
你将见到你的帐幕平安无恙，察看羊栏时，一无所失。
25 You shall know that your descendants are many, and your offspring as the grass of the earth.
你将确知子孙繁昌，你的苗裔犹如田野青草。
26 You shall approach the grave in full vigor, as a shock of grain comes in at its season.
你必高年才葬于墓，好象麦捆准时收藏。
27 Lo, this we have searched out; so it is! This we have heard, and you should know.
看，这是我们所观察的真理，你若细听，自会获益良多。

Chapter 6
1 Then Job answered and said:

2 Ah, could my anguish but be measured and my calamity laid with it in the scales,
恨不得有人衡量衡量我的痛苦，把我所受的灾祸一起放在天秤上！
3 They would now outweigh the sands of the sea! Because of this I speak without restraint.
它们重过海岸的沙粒，难怪我出言冒失。
4 For the arrows of the Almighty pierce me, and my spirit drinks in their poison; the terrors of God are arrayed against me.
因为全能者的箭射中了我，我的心灵喝尽它们的毒汁，天主的恐吓列阵攻击我。
5 1 Does the wild ass bray when he has grass? Does the ox low over his fodder?
野驴有青草，难道还嘶叫？牛对着草料，难道还吼鸣？
6 Can a thing insipid be eaten without salt? Is there flavor in the white of an egg?
淡而无盐的食物，岂能下咽？蛋白能有什么滋味？
7 I refuse to touch them; they are loathsome food to me.
这使我厌恶的食物，我实不愿沾唇。
8 Oh, that I might have my request, and that God would grant what I long for:
惟愿我的祈求实现，愿天主满全我的希望！
9 Even that God would decide to crush me, that he would put forth his hand and cut me off!
愿天主击毁我，松手使我消灭！
10 Then I should still have consolation and could exult through unremitting pain, because I have not transgressed the commands of the Holy One.
这样，我仍有安慰，在凄惨的痛苦中，仍然喜悦，因为我没有违犯圣者的教训。
11 What strength have I that I should endure, and what is my limit that I should be patient?
我有什么力量使我期待，有什么结局使我拖延生命？
12 Have I the strength of stones, or is my flesh of bronze?
我的力量岂有岩石之坚？我的肉身岂是铜制的？
13 Have I no helper, and has advice deserted me?
在我内还能找到什么作援助？任何扶助岂不都远离了我？
14 A friend owes kindness to one in despair, though he have forsaken the fear of the Almighty.
谁不怜悯自己的友人，就是放弃了敬畏天主之心。
15 My brethren are undependable as a brook, as watercourses that run dry in the wadies;
我的兄弟们诡诈有如溪水，有如水过即干的河床。
16 Though they may be black with ice, and with snow heaped upon them,
溪水因结冰而混浊，其上盖有积雪；
17 Yet once they flow, they cease to be; in the heat, they disappear from their place.
季节一温暖，溪水即涸竭，天气一炎热，河床枯干。
18 Caravans turn aside from their routes; they go into the desert and perish.
商队离开大道，走入荒野，因而命丧。
19 2 The caravans of Tema search, the companies of Sheba have hopes;
特玛的商队观望，舍巴的客旅期待，
20 They are disappointed, though they were confident; they come there and are frustrated.
但他们的希望落了空，不管到了那里，必狼狈不堪。
21 It is thus that you have now become for me; you see a terrifying thing and are afraid.
现今你们待我也是一样：看见了我，就惊惶失措。
22 Have I asked you to give me anything, to offer a gift for me from your possessions,
难道我说过：“请送我礼物！把你们的财产送我一分？
23 Or to deliver me from the enemy, or to redeem me from oppressors?
救我摆脱仇人的权势，赎我脱离残暴者的掌握？”
24 Teach me, and I will be silent; prove to me wherein I have erred.
请教训我！我必静听。我有什么错，请指示我！
25 How agreeable are honest words; yet how unconvincing is your argument!
正义的言词是多么甘美！但你们的责斥是指摘什么？
26 Do you consider your words as proof, but the sayings of a desperate man as wind?
你们岂能只在言词上吹毛求疵？以绝望者的话当耳边风？
27 You would even cast lots for the orphan, and would barter away your friend!

1 1 Is not man's life on earth a drudgery? Are not his days those of a hireling?
人生在世，岂不象服兵役？人的岁月，岂不象佣工的时日？
2 He is a slave who longs for the shade, a hireling who waits for his wages.
有如奴工切望阴凉，佣工期待工资：
3 So I have been assigned months of misery, and troubled nights have been told off for me.
这样，我也只有承受失意的岁月，为我注定的苦痛长夜。
4 If in bed I say,＂When shall I arise?＂ then the night drags on; I am filled with restlessness until the dawn.
我卧下时说：＂几时天亮？＂我起来时又说：＂何时到黑夜？＂我整夜辗转反侧，直到天亮。
5 My flesh is clothed with worms and scabs; my skin cracks and festers;

6 My days are swifter than a weaver's shuttle; they come to an end without hope.

7 Remember that my life is like the wind; I shall not see happiness again.

8 The eye that now sees me shall no more behold me; as you look at me, I shall be gone.

9 As a cloud dissolves and vanishes, so he who goes down to the nether world shall come up no more.

10 He shall not again return to his house; his place shall know him no more.

11 My own utterance I will not restrain; I will speak in the anguish of my spirit; I will complain in the bitterness of my soul.

12 2 3 Am I the sea, or a monster of the deep, that you place a watch over me? Why have you set me up as an object of attack; or why should I be a target for you?

13 When I say,＂My bed shall comfort me, my couch shall ease my complaint,＂

14 Then you affright me with dreams and with visions terrify me,

15 So that I should prefer choking and death rather than my pains.

Chapter 8
1 Bildad the Shuhite spoke out and said:

2 How long will you utter such things? The words from your mouth are like a mighty wind!
这些话你要讲到几时？你口中的话象狂风要到何时？
3 Does God pervert judgment, and does the Almighty distort justice?
天主岂能违背公道？全能者岂能屈枉正义？
4 If your children have sinned against him and he has left them in the grip of their guilt,
若你的子女得罪了他，他必将他们交于罪过的权势下。
5 Still, if you yourself have recourse to God and make supplication to the Almighty,
你若急切寻觅天主，哀求全能者；
6 Should you be blameless and upright, surely now he will awake for you and restore your rightful domain;
你若纯洁正直，他必亲来守护你，恢复你正义的居所。
7 Your former state will be of little moment, for in time to come you will flourish indeed.
你起初虽然微小，今后必要兴隆强大。
8 If you inquire of the former generations, and give heed to the experience of the fathers
请你查问上一代，细想祖先的经验；
9 (As we are but of yesterday and have no knowledge, because our days on earth are but a shadow),

10 Will they not teach you and tell you and utter their words of understanding?

14 His confidence is but a gossamer thread and his trust is a spider's web.

15 He shall rely upon his family, but it shall not last; he shall cling to it, but it shall not endure.

16 He is full of sap before sunrise, and beyond his garden his shoots go forth;

17 About a heap of stones are his roots entwined; among the rocks he takes hold.
根盘据石堆，缠绕石屋上。
18 Yet if one tears him from his place, it will disown him: ＂I have never seen you!＂

19 There he lies rotting beside the road, and out of the soil another sprouts.

20 Behold, God will not cast away the upright; neither will he take the hand of the wicked.

21 Once more will he fill your mouth with laughter, and your lips with rejoicing.

3 Should one wish to contend with him, he could not answer him once in a thousand times.

4 God is wise in heart and mighty in strength; who has withstood him and remained unscathed?

5 He removes the mountains before they know it; he overturns them in his anger.

14 How much less shall I give him any answer, or choose out arguments against him!

15 Even though I were right, I could not answer him, but should rather beg for what was due me.
纵然有理，也不敢回答，唯有哀求我的判官开恩。
16 If I appealed to him and he answered my call, I could not believe that he would hearken to my words;
我向他呼求，纵然他答应我，我仍不相信他会听我的呼声。
17 With a tempest he might overwhelm me, and multiply my wounds without cause;
他为了一根头发而折磨我，无故增加我的创伤；
18 He need not suffer me to draw breath, but might fill me with bitter griefs.
致使我不能喘一口气，使我饱尝苦辛。
19 If it be a question of strength, he is mighty; and if of judgment, who will call him to account?
论力量，他强而有力；论审判，谁能将他传来？
20 Though I were right, my own mouth might condemn me; were I innocent, he might put me in the wrong.

21 Though I am innocent, I myself cannot know it; I despise my life.

23 When the scourge slays suddenly, he laughs at the despair of the innocent.

24 The earth is given into the hands of the wicked; he covers the faces of its judges. If it is not he, who then is it?

25 My days are swifter than a runner, they flee away; they see no happiness;

26 They shoot by like skiffs of reed, like an eagle swooping upon its prey.

27 If I say: I will forget my complaining, I will lay aside my sadness and be of good cheer,

28 2 Then I am in dread of all my pains; I know that you will not hold me innocent.

29 If I must be accounted guilty, why then should I strive in vain?

30 If I should wash myself with snow and cleanse my hands with lye,

31 Yet you would plunge me in the ditch, so that my garments would abhor me.

32 For he is not a man like myself, that I should answer him, that we should come together in judgment.

33 Would that there were an arbiter between us, who could lay his hand upon us both

34 and withdraw his rod from me. Would that his terrors did not frighten me;

14 If you remove all iniquity from your conduct, and let not injustice dwell in your tent,

15 Surely then you may lift up your face in innocence; you may stand firm and unafraid.

1 Then Job replied and said:

2 No doubt you are the intelligent folk, and with you wisdom shall die!
的确，只有你们是有知识的子民；那么，你们一死，智慧也与你们一同丧亡！
3 But I have intelligence as well as you; for who does not know such things as these?
其实，我和你们有同样的心理，我并不亚于你们！谁不知道这些事？
4 1 I have become the sport of my neighbors: "The one whom God answers when he calls upon him, The just, the perfect man," is a laughing-stock;
我这呼吁天主而蒙应允的人，却被他的友人所嘲笑，无辜的义人却成了笑柄。
5 The undisturbed esteem my downfall a disgrace such as awaits unsteady feet;
幸运的人心想：遭难的人应受蔑视，失足的人应再予以打击。
6 Yet the tents of robbers are prosperous, and those who provoke God are secure.
但是，强盗的帐幕竟能安全，触怒天主的人，以势力为神的人却享平安。
7 But now ask the beasts to teach you, and the birds of the air to tell you;
请你询问走兽，它们也会开导你；询问天上的飞鸟，它们也会告诉你；
8 Or the reptiles on earth to instruct you, and the fish of the sea to inform you.
地上的爬虫也会教训你，海中的鱼族也会给你说明。
9 Which of all these does not know that the hand of God has done this?
它们中有谁不知道：是天主的手创造了这一切？
10 In his hand is the soul of every living thing, and the life breath of all mankind.
因为一切活物的生魂，一切血肉之人的灵魂，都握在他手中。
11 Does not the ear judge words as the mouth tastes food?

12 So with old age is wisdom, and with length of days understanding.

13 With him are wisdom and might; his are counsel and understanding.

17 He sends counselors away barefoot, and of judges he makes fools.

18 2 He loosens the bonds imposed by kings and leaves but a waistcloth to bind the king's own loins.

19 and lets their never-failing waters flow away.

20 He silences the trusted adviser, and takes discretion from the aged.

21 He breaks down the barriers of the streams
使贵人备受侮辱，使勇士的腰带松弛；
22 The recesses of the darkness he discloses, and brings the gloom forth to the light.

11 Though his frame is full of youthful vigor, this shall lie with him in the dust.

17 1 He shall see no streams of oil, no torrents of honey or milk.

18 Restoring his gains, he shall not enjoy them; though his wealth increases, he shall not rejoice.

19 Because he has oppressed the poor, and stolen a patrimony he had not built up,

20 Though he has known no quiet in his greed, his treasures shall not save him.

21 Therefore his prosperity shall not endure,

22 When he abounds to overflowing, he shall be brought into straits, and nought shall be left of his goods.

26 Complete darkness is in store for him; the fire which shall consume him needs not to be fanned.

4 Is my complaint toward man? And why should I not be impatient?

4 They force the needy off the road; all the poor of the land are driven into hiding.

14 Though his children be many, the sword is their destiny. His offspring shall not be filled with bread.

1 1 There is indeed a mine for silver, and a place for gold which men refine.

1 Then the three men ceased to answer Job, because he was righteous in his own eyes.

2 1 But the anger of Elihu, son of Barachel the Buzite, of the family of Ram, was kindled. He was angry with Job for considering himself rather than God to be in the right.

3 He was angry also with the three friends because they had not found a good answer and had not condemned Job.

1 [2] Elihu means ＂My God is he.＂ This speaker was from Buz, which, according to Jeremiah 25:23 was near Tema and Dedan. A young man, he impetuously and impatiently upbraids Job for his boldness toward God, and the three friends for not successfully answering Job. He undertakes to defend God's absolute justice and to explain more clearly why there is suffering. While fundamentally his position is the same as that of the three friends, he does locate more definitely, though not perfectly, the place of suffering in the divine plan.

Chapter 33
1 Therefore, O Job, hear my discourse, and hearken to all my words.

2 Behold, now I open my mouth; my tongue and my voice form words.

3 I will state directly what is in my mind, my lips shall utter knowledge sincerely;

4 For the spirit of God has made me, the breath of the Almighty keeps me alive.

5 If you are able, refute me; draw up your arguments and stand forth.

14 For God does speak, perhaps once, or even twice, though one perceive it not.

16 Have you entered into the sources of the sea, or walked about in the depths of the abyss?

1 The LORD then said to Job:

4 Behold, I am of little account; what can I answer you? I put my hand over my mouth.

1 Then Job answered the LORD and said:

2 1 I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be hindered.

3 I have dealt with great things that I do not understand; things too wonderful for me, which I cannot know.

11 4 Then all his brethren and his sisters came to him, and all his former acquaintances, and they dined with him in his house. They condoled with him and comforted him for all the evil which the LORD had brought upon him; and each one gave him a piece of money and a gold ring.

13 And he had seven sons and three daughters,
