3我曾顯現給亞巴郎、依撒格和雅各伯為「全能的天主」，但沒有以「雅威」的名字將我啟示給他們。 3That appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, by the name of God Almighty; and my name ADONAI I did not shew them.
4我也與他們立了約，許下將他們寄居而作客的客納罕地賜給他們。 4And I made a covenant with them, to give them the land of Chanaan, the land of their pilgrimage wherein they were strangers.
5如今我聽見了以色列子民因埃及人的奴役而發的哀號，想起了我的約。 5I have heard the groaning of the children of Israel, wherewith the Egyptians have oppressed them: and I have remembered my covenant.
6為此你應該對以色列子民說：我是上主，我要使你們擺脫埃及人的虐待，拯救你們脫離他們的奴役，用伸開的手臂，藉嚴厲的懲罰救贖你們。 6Therefore say to the children of Israel: I am the Lord who will bring you out from the work prison of the Egyptians, and will deliver you from bondage: and redeem you with a high arm, and great judgments.
7我要以你們作我的百姓，我作你們的天主。你們將承認我是上主，你們的天主，使你們擺脫埃及人的虐待。 7And I will take you to myself for my people, I will be your God: and you shall know that I am the Lord your God who brought you out from the work prison of the Egyptians.
8我領你們要去的地方，就是我舉手誓許給亞巴郎、依撒格和雅各伯的地方；我要把那地方賜給你們作為產業。──我是上主。」 8And brought you into the land, concerning which I lifted up my hand to give it to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and I will give it you to possess, I am the Lord.
9梅瑟將這些話告訴了以色列子民，但他們由於苦工喪氣，不肯聽梅瑟的話。 9And Moses told all this to the children of Israel: but they did not hearken to him, for anguish of spirit, and most painful work.

12梅瑟當面回答上主說：「以色列子民既不肯聽我，法郎又怎肯聽我？況且我又是笨口結舌的人。」 12Moses answered before the Lord Behold the children of Israel do no hearken to me; and how will Pharao hear me, especially as I am of uncircumcised lips?
13上主訓示梅瑟和亞郎，命令他們去見以色列子民和埃及王法郎，好領以色列子民出離埃及國。 13And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, and he gave them a charge unto the children of Israel, and unto Pharao the king of Egypt, that they should bring forth the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt.

30梅瑟當面回答上主說：「看，我是個笨口結舌的人，法郎怎麼肯聽我？」 30And Moses said before the Lord: Lo I am of uncircumcised lips, how will Pharao hear me?

「全能的天主」，原文作「厄耳沙待」，意义难明，古译本多作「全能的天主」。以色列的列祖虽应用过「雅威」（上主）为天主的名号，但自从梅瑟在曷勒布见到异象之後，「雅威」一名给予以色列人一种新的意义：雅威是立盟约、施救恩和支配人类历史的天主。

14-27节记载雅各伯前叁个儿子（创29:32-34）：勒乌本、西默盎和肋未的後代。作者的目的，是指出肋未支派在以色列十二支派中所占的地位。本章的名单是不全的，参阅户26:5-14；创46:11；户3:17；出2:2；户26:57-59; 25:6-13。
