1以色列人出埃及國後第二年二月一日，上主在西乃曠野於會幕內訓示梅瑟說： 1And the Lord spoke to Moses in the desert of Sinai in the tabernacle of the covenant, the first day of the second month, the second year of their going out of Egypt, saying:
2「你們要依照以色列子民的宗族和家系，統計全會眾的人口，把男丁的姓名都一一登記。 2Take the sum of all the congregation of the children of Israel by their families, and houses, and the names of every one, as many as are of the male sex,
3在以色列中，凡二十歲以上能上陣作戰的，你和亞郎要一隊一隊地統計。 3From twenty years old and upwards, of all the men of Israel fit for war, and you shall number them by their troops, thou and Aaron.
4每一支派有一人同你們合作，他們都是各宗族的族長。 4And there shall be with you the princes of the tribes, and of the houses in their kindreds,
5那協助你們的人名如下：勒烏本支派，是舍德烏爾的兒子厄里族爾； 5Whose names are these: Of Ruben, Elisur the son of Sedeur.
6西默盎支派，是族黎沙待的兒子舍路米耳； 6Of Simeon, Salamiel the son of Surisaddai.
7猶大支派，是阿米納達布的兒子納赫雄； 7Of Juda, Nahasson the son of Aminadab.
8依撒加爾支派，是族阿爾的兒子乃塔乃耳； 8Of Issachar, Nathanael the son of Suar.
9則步隆支派，是赫隆的兒子厄里雅布； 9Of Zabulon, Eliab the son of Helon.
10若瑟的兩個兒子：厄弗辣因支派，是阿米胡得的兒子厄里沙瑪；默納協支派，是培達族爾的兒子加默里耳； 10And of the sons of Joseph: of Ephraim, Elisama the son of Ammiud: of Manasses, Gamaliel the son of Phadassur.
11本雅明支派，是基德敖尼的兒子阿彼丹； 11Of Benjamin, Abidan the son of Gedeon.
12丹支派，是阿米沙待的兒子阿希厄則爾； 12Of Dan, Ahiezer the son of Ammisaddai.
13阿協爾支派，是敖革蘭的兒子帕革厄耳； 13Of Aser, Phegiel the son of Ochran.
14加得支派，是勒烏耳的兒子厄肋雅撒夫； 14Of Gad, Eliasaph the son of Duel.
15納斐塔里支派，是厄南的兒子阿希辣。」 15Of Nephtali, Ahira the son of Enan.
16這些人是由會眾中選出來的，都是他們宗族的領袖，以色列的千夫長。 16These are the most noble princes of the multitude by their tribes and kindreds, and the chiefs of the army of Israel:
17梅瑟和亞郎就帶著這些提名派定的人， 17Whom Moses and Aaron took with all the multitude of the common people:
18於二月一日召集了全會眾，人都依照宗族和家系登了記，由二十歲以上的，都一一將姓名登了記。 18And assembled them on the first day of the second month, reckoning them up by the kindreds, and houses, and families, and heads, and names of every one from twenty years old and upward,
19上主怎樣吩咐了梅瑟，梅瑟就怎樣在西乃曠野統計了他們。 19As the Lord had commanded Moses. And they were numbered in the desert of Sinai.
20以色列的長子勒烏本子孫的後裔，依照宗族和家系，二十歲以上，凡能上陣作戰的男子，都一一將姓名登了記； 20Of Ruben the eldest son of Israel, by their generations and families and houses and names of every head, all that were of the male sex, from twenty years old and upward, that were able to go forth to war,
21勒烏本支派登記的，計有四萬六千五百。 21Were forty-six thousand five hundred.
22西默盎子孫的後裔，依照宗族和家系，二十歲以上，凡能上陣作戰的男子，都一一將姓名登了記， 22Of the sons of Simeon by their generations and families, and houses of their kindreds, were reckoned up by the names and heads of every one, all that were of the male sex, from twenty years old and upward, that were able to go forth to war,
23西默盎支派登記的，計有五萬九千三百。 23Fifty-nine thousand three hundred.
24加得子孫的後裔，依照宗族和家系，二十歲以上，凡能上陣作戰的，都將姓名登了記； 24Of the sons of Gad, by their generations and families and houses of their kindreds were reckoned up by the names of every one from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war,
25加得支派登記的，計有四萬五千六百五十。 25Forty-five thousand six hundred and fifty.
26猶大子孫的後裔，依照宗族和家系，二十歲以上，凡能上陣作戰的，都將姓名登了記； 26Of the sons of Juda, by their generations and families and houses of their kindreds, by the names of every one from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war,
27猶大支派登記的，計有七萬四千六百。 27Were reckoned up seventy-four thousand six hundred.
28依撒加爾子孫的後裔，依照宗族和家系，二十歲以上，凡能上陣作戰的，都將姓名登了記， 28Of the sons of Issachar, by their generations and families and houses of their kindreds, by the names of every one from twenty years old and upward, all that could go forth to war,
29依撒加爾支派登記的，計有五萬四千四百。 29Were reckoned up fifty-four thousand four hundred.
30則步隆子孫的後裔，依照宗族和家系，二十歲以上，凡能上陣作戰的，都將姓名登了記； 30Of the sons of Zabulon, by the generations and families and houses of their kindreds, were reckoned up by the names of every one from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war,
31則步隆支派登記的，計有五萬七千四百。 31Fifty-seven thousand four hundred.
32若瑟的子孫：厄弗辣因子孫的後裔，依照宗族和家系，二十歲以上，凡能上陣作戰的，都將姓名登了記； 32Of the sons of Joseph, namely, of the sons of Ephraim, by the generations and families and houses of their kindreds, were reckoned up by the names of every one, from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war,
33厄弗辣因支派登記的，計有四萬五百。 33Forty thousand five hundred.
34默納協子孫的後裔，依照宗族和家系，二十歲以上，凡能上陣作戰的男子，都一一將姓名登了記； 34Moreover of the sons of Manasses, by the generations and families and houses of their kindreds, were reckoned up by the names of every one from twenty years old and upward, all that could go forth to war,
35默納協支派登記的，計有三萬二千二百。 35Thirty-two thousand two hundred.
36本雅明子孫的後裔，依照宗族和家系，二十歲以上，凡能上陣作戰的，都將姓名登了記； 36Of the sons of Benjamin, by their generations and families and houses of their kindreds, were reckoned up by the names of every one from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war,
37本雅明支派登記的，計有三萬五千四百。 37Thirty-five thousand four hundred.
38丹子孫的後裔，依照宗族和家系，二十歲以上，凡能上陣作戰的，都將姓名登了記； 38Of the sons of Dan, by their generations and families and houses of their kindreds, were reckoned up by the names of every one from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war,
39丹支派登記的，計有六萬二千七百。 39Sixty-two thousand seven hundred.
40阿協爾子孫的後裔，依照宗族和家系，二十歲以上，凡能上陣作戰的，都將姓名登了記； 40Of the sons of Aser, by their generations and families and houses of their kindreds, were reckoned up by the names of every one from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war,
41阿協爾支派登記的，計有四萬一千五百。 41Forty-one thousand and five hundred.
42納斐塔里子孫的後裔，依照宗族和家系，二十歲以上，凡能上陣作戰的，都將姓名登了記； 42Of the sons of Nephtali, by their generations and families and houses of their kindreds, were reckoned up by the names of every one from twenty years old and upward, all that were able to go forth to war,
43納斐塔里支派登記的，計有五萬三千四百： 43Fifty-three thousand four hundred.
44以上是梅瑟和亞郎並以色列的首領十二人──每宗族一人──所登記的人數。 44These era they who were numbered by Moses and Aaron, and the twelve princes of Israel, every one by the houses of their kindreds.
45以色列中二十歲以上，凡能上陣作戰的以色列子民，全依照宗族和家系登了記。 45And the whole number of the children of Israel by their houses and families, from twenty years old and upward, that were able to go to war,
46全體登記的總數，是六十萬三千五百五十。 46Were six hundred and three thousand five hundred and fifty men.
47但是肋未人沒有依照自己的宗派同他們一起登記， 47But the Levites in the tribes of their families were not numbered with them.
48因為上主曾訓示梅瑟說： 48And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
49「只有肋未支派，不要登記，不要將他們列在以色列子民內。 49Number not the tribe of Levi, neither shalt thou put down the sum of them with the children of Israel:
50你應派肋未人管理會幕和其中一切器皿，並一切附屬物。他們要搬運會幕和其中一切器皿，在會幕中服務，住在會幕的四周。 50But appoint them over the tabernacle of the testimony, and all the vessels thereof, and whatsoever pertaineth to the ceremonies. They shall carry the tabernacle and all the furniture thereof: and they shall minister, and shall encamp round about the tabernacle.
51會幕要遷移時，肋未人拆卸；會幕要搭紮時，肋未人張搭；若俗人走近，應處死刑。 51When you are to go forward, the Levites shall take down the tabernacle: when you are to camp, they shall set it up. What stranger soever cometh to it, shall be slain.
52以色列子民應分隊紮營，各歸本旗。 52And the children of Israel shall camp every man by his troops and bands and army.
53但肋未人應在會幕四周紮營，免得以色列子民會眾觸犯天怒；肋未人應負責看守會幕。」 53But the Levites shall pitch their tents round about the tabernacle, lest there come indignation upon the multitude of the children of Israel, and they shall keep watch, and guard the tabernacle of the testimony.
54以色列子民都照辦了；上主怎樣吩咐了梅瑟，他們就怎樣辦了。 54And the children of Israel did according to all things which the Lord had commanded Moses.
1:1-4
按出30:12，天主早已吩咐梅瑟，应统计一切能上阵作战的以色列男子；现今梅瑟即履行此令。
1:5-19
调查户口的目的，就是要知道能上阵打仗的男子的数目。
1:20-46
若瑟的两个儿子厄弗辣因与默纳协，按创48:5的记载，雅各伯曾视为己子，故与十二列祖同列。厄弗辣因继其父位，默纳协支派替代肋未支派，承受了客纳罕福地，以补「十二」之数。
1:47-54
肋未人因为在旷野中曾协助梅瑟剿灭了拜金牛者（出32:27-28），所以被选为敬礼上主之人。他们的责任在於要保持洁净无罪，所以禁为军人。51节的「俗人」即指非肋未人。
