1有肋未家族的一個男子娶了肋未家族的一個女人為妻。 1After this there went a man of the house of Levi; and took a wife of his own kindred.
2這女人懷孕生了一個兒子，見他俊美，就把他藏了三個月。 2And she conceived, and bore a son; and seeing him a goodly child hid him three months.
3以後不能再藏了，就拿了一個蒲草筐子，塗上瀝青和石漆，把孩子放在裡面，將筐放在尼羅河邊的蘆葦叢中。 3And when she could hide him no longer, she took a basket made of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and pitch: and put the little babe therein, and laid him in the sedges by the river's brink,
4孩子的姐姐遠遠的站著，想知道孩子究竟怎樣。 4His sister standing afar off, and taking notice what would be done.
5當時法郎的一個公主下到尼羅河邊洗澡，使女們在河邊上徘徊。公主發見蘆葦叢中那個筐子，就吩咐自己的使女將筐子取來。 5And behold the daughter of Pharao came down to wash herself in the river: and her maids walked by the river's brink. And when she saw the basket in the sedges, she sent one of her maids for it: and when it was brought,
6她打開一看，見有一個孩子正在哭涕，就動了可憐他的心說：「這必是一個希伯來人的孩子。」 6She opened it and seeing within it an infant crying, having compassion on it she said: This is one of the babes of the Hebrews.
7孩子的姐姐就對法郎的公主說：「你願意我去從希伯來婦女中給你請一個奶媽，為你乳養這個孩子嗎？」 7And the child's sister said to her Shall I go and call to thee a Hebrew woman, to nurse the babe?
8法郎的公主回答說：「你去罷！」少女便去叫了孩子的母親來。 8She answered: Go. The maid went and called her mother.
9法郎的公主對她說：「你將這孩子抱去，為我乳養他，我必給你工錢。」那婦人就接過去，乳養這個孩子。 9And Pharao's daughter said to her. Take this child and nurse him for me: I will give thee thy wages. The woman took, and nursed the child: and when he was grown up, she delivered him to Pharao's daughter.
10孩子長大了，那婦人就把他帶到公主那裡；公主遂收他作自己的兒子，給他起名叫梅瑟，說：「因為我從水裡拉出了他。」 10And she adopted him for a son, and called him Moses, saying: Because I took him out of the water.
11過了許久，梅瑟已經長大，有一次出去探望自己的同胞，看見他們作苦工，又見一個埃及人打他的一個同胞希伯來人； 11In those days after Moses was grown up, he went out to his brethren: and saw their affliction, and an Egyptian striking one of the Hebrews his brethren.
12他向四面一望，見沒有人，便將那埃及人打死，將他埋在沙土中。 12And when he had looked about this way and that way, and saw no one there, he slew the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.
13第二天他又出去，見兩個希伯來人打架，就對那無理的一方說：「你為什麼打你同族的人？」 13And going out the next day, he saw two Hebrews quarrelling: and he said to him that did the wrong: Why strikest thou thy neighbour?
14那人回答說：「誰立了你作我們的首領和判官？難道你想殺我，像殺那埃及人一樣嗎？」梅瑟就害怕了，心裡想：「那事一定叫人知道了！」 14But he answered: Who hath appointed thee prince and judge over us? Wilt thou kill me, as thou didst yesterday kill the Egyptian? Moses feared, and said: How is this come to be known?
15法郎聽說這事，就想殺死梅瑟；而梅瑟卻離開法郎逃走，去了米德楊地，坐在井旁。 15And Pharao heard of this word and sought to kill Moses: but he fled from his sight, and abode in the land of Madian, and he sat down by a well.
16米德楊的司祭有七個女兒，她們來打水，灌滿水槽，要飲父親的羊群。 16And the priest of Madian had seven daughters, who came to draw water: and when the troughs were filled, desired to water their father's flocks.
17別的牧童來了，趕走了她們；梅瑟便起來保護了她們，也飲了她們的羊。 17And the shepherds came and drove them away: and Moses arose, and defending the maids, watered their sheep.
18她們回到父親勒烏耳那裡，父親問她們說：「你們今天為什麼回來的這麼快？」 18And when they returned to Raguel their father, he said to them: Why are ye come sooner than usual?
19她們回答說：「有一個埃及人救我們擺脫了牧童的手，還給我們打水飲了羊群。」 19They answered: A man of Egypt delivered us from the hands of the shepherds: and he drew water also with us, and gave the sheep to drink.
20他對女兒們說：「他在那裡？你們為什麼撇下他？去請他來吃飯！」 20But he said: Where is he? why have you let the man go? call him that he may eat bread.
21於是梅瑟決定住在那人那裡，那人將自己的女兒漆頗辣給了梅瑟為妻。 21And Moses swore that he would dwell with him. And he took Sephora his daughter to wife:
22她生了一個兒子，梅瑟給他起名叫革爾熊，因為他說：「我在外方作了旅客。」 22And she bore him a son, whom he called Gersam, saying: I have been a stranger in a foreign country. And she bore another, whom he called Eliezer, saying: For the God of my father, my helper hath delivered me out of the hand of Pharao.
23過了很久，埃及王死了。那時以色列子民由於勞苦工作，都嘆息哀號：他們因勞役所發出的求救聲，升到天主面前。 23Now after a long time the king of Egypt died: and the children of Israel groaning, cried out because of the works: and their cry went up unto God from the works.
24天主聽見了他們的哀號，就記起了他與亞巴郎、依撒格和雅各伯所立的盟約。 24And he heard their groaning, and remembered the covenant which he made with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
25天主遂眷顧了以色列子民，特別垂念他們。 25And the Lord looked upon the children of Israel, and he knew them.

1-3节属前章，劝人守安息日为圣日。守安息日的原因与目的，见出23:12；申5:12-15。
2:4-3:24
为创造天地万物的另一记载。原来在这记载中只用了上主（雅威）的名词，但将这个记载与上章的记载编在一起时，补入了「天主」的名词。这记载的中心为人：天主对人，人对天主的态度。关於人的来历和本性，作者用简略的话，教训人一端论宗教和文化的最高深的道理：人肉身的形成，好像其他的动物，是由尘土造成的，对於灵魂却有极大的区别，它是直接由天主所造。伊甸乐园位於何处，人不得而知。乐园是天主考验人的地方。「生命树」所象徵的是天主愿意赐给人的「不死」之恩。「知善恶的树」，是试探人的工具。「知善恶」的意思，大概是说：人一犯天主的禁令，就知道所失去的超性恩宠 真善，是多麽美善，所犯的罪恶 真恶，是如何凶恶。

说明人犯罪之前，天主已叫人应该工作。
2:18-25
本段的要义有二：一、人给动物命名，是表示人受有统治一切造物的权柄；二、从亚当的肉身形成了第一个女人，是指女人同他有一样的人性，像亚当一样是照天主的肖像受造的。夫妇结为一体，表示婚姻的结合是天主制定的，人不能拆散（玛19:5,6）。赤身不害羞，是说原祖未犯罪前纯洁无罪的状态，还未体验到罪过的恶果。
