1以色列的兒子們，各帶了家眷，同雅各伯來到埃及；他們的名字記載如下： 1These are the names of the children of Israel, that went into Egypt with Jacob: they went in, every man with his household:
2勒烏本、西默盎、肋未和猶大， 2Ruben, Simeon, Levi, Juda,
3依撒加爾，則步隆和本雅明， 3Issachar, Zabulon, and Benjamin,
4丹和納斐塔里，加得和阿協爾。 4Dan, and Nephtali, Gad and Aser.
5他們全是雅各伯所生的，一共七十人；若瑟那時已經在埃及。 5And all the souls that came out of Jacob's thigh, were seventy: but Joseph was in Egypt.
6若瑟和他的眾兄弟，以及這一代人死了以後， 6After he was dead, and all his brethren, and all that generation,
7以色列的子孫生育繁殖，數目增多，極其強盛，佈滿了那地。 7The children of Israel increased, and sprung up into multitudes, and growing exceedingly strong they filled the land.
8有位不認識若瑟的新王興起，統治了埃及。 8In the mean time there arose a new king over Egypt, that knew not Joseph:
9他對自己的人民說：「看，以色列子民，比我們又多又強。 9And he said to his people: Behold the people of the children of Israel are numerous and stronger than we.
10來，我們要用智謀對付他們，免得他們繁盛起來，一遇戰爭，就去與我們的敵人聯合，攻擊我們，然後離開此地。」 10Come, let us wisely oppress them, lest they multiply: and if any war shall rise against us, join with our enemies, and having overcome us, depart out of the land.
11於是派定督工管制他們，以苦役壓迫他們，叫他們給法郎建築丕通和辣默色斯兩座貯貨城。 11Therefore he set over them masters of the works, to afflict them with burdens, and they built for Pharao cities of tabernacles, Phithom and Ramesses.
12但是越壓迫他們，他們越增多，也越繁殖，以至埃及人都怕以色列子民。 12But the more they oppressed them, the more they were multiplied, and increased:
13於是埃及人更嚴厲地強迫以色列子民做苦工， 13And the Egyptians hated the children of Israel, and afflicted them and mocked them:
14強迫他們作和泥做磚的苦工，田間的一切勞工，以及種種苦工，使他們的生活十分痛苦。 14And they made their life bitter with hard works in clay, and brick, and with all manner of service, wherewith they were overcharged in the works of the earth.
15埃及王又吩咐為希伯來女人接生的收生婆，一個名叫史斐辣，一個名叫普亞的說： 15And the king of Egypt spoke to the midwives of the Hebrews: of whom one was called Sephora, the other Phua,
16「你們為希伯來女人接生時，要看著她們臨盆！若是男孩，就殺死；若是女孩，就讓她活著。」 16Commanding them: When you shall do the office of midwives to the Hebrew women, and the time of delivery is come: if it be a man child, kill it: if a woman, keep it alive.
17但是收生婆敬畏天主，沒有照埃及王的吩咐去作，保留了男孩的性命。 17But the midwives feared God, and did not do as the king of Egypt had commanded, but saved the men children.
18埃及王將收生婆召來，問她們說：「你們為什麼這樣做，竟叫男孩子活著呢？」 18And the king called for them and said: What is that you meant to do, that you would save the men children?
19收生婆回答法郎說：「希伯來女人與埃及女人不同，她們富有生機，收生婆還沒有來，她們已生產了。」 19They answered: The Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women: for they themselves are skillful in the office of a midwife; and they are delivered before we come to them.
20天主遂恩待了收生婆。以色列子民更加增多起來，更加強盛。 20Therefore God dealt well with the midwives: and the people multiplied and grew exceedingly strong.
21因為收生婆敬畏天主，天主就使她們家門興旺。 21And because the midwives feared God, he built them houses.
22法郎於是訓令他的全體人民說：「凡希伯來人所生的男孩，你們應把他丟在尼羅河裡；凡是女孩，留她活著！」 22Pharao therefore charged all his people, saying: Whatsoever shall be born of the male sex, ye shall cast into the river: whatsoever of the female, ye shall save alive.

雅各伯的儿子们（创46:8-27）在此没有按照长幼，而是按照生母编列，先记主母，後记婢女的儿子。
1:8-14
「新王」（8节）大概是辣默色斯二世（公元前一二九二 一二二五）。丕通即今之特耳玛斯顾大；以王名得名的辣默色斯城，可能即今之塔尼斯地方。由14节可以推知法郎对待以色列人，有如对待战俘。
1:15-22
为以色列妇女接生的，大概是埃及女人。由於她们也敬畏上主，不但未下毒手，反而保护了希伯来人初生的男婴，所以天主也祝福了她们。参阅申25:9；撒下7:11；列上2:24。
