2撒辣依就對亞巴郎說：「請看，上主既使我不能生育，你可去親近我的婢女，或許我能由她得到孩子。」亞巴郎就聽了撒辣依的話。 2She said to her husband: Behold, the Lord hath restrained me from bearing: go in unto my handmaid, it may be I may have children of her at least. And when he agreed to her request,
3亞巴郎住在客納罕地十年後，亞巴郎的妻子撒辣依將自己的埃及婢女哈加爾，給了丈夫亞巴郎做妾。 3She took Agar the Egyptian her handmaid, ten years after they first dwelt in the land of Chanaan, and gave her to her husband to wife.
4亞巴郎自從同哈加爾親近，哈加爾就懷了孕；她見自己懷了孕；就看不起自己的主母。 4And he went in to her. But she, perceiving that she was with child, despised her mistress.
5撒辣依對亞巴郎說：「我受羞辱是你的過錯。我將我的婢女放在你懷裡，她一見自己懷了孕，便看不起我。願上主在我與你之間來判斷！」 5And Sarai said to Abram: Thou dost unjustly with me: I gave my handmaid into thy bosom, and she perceiving herself to be with child, despiseth me. The Lord judge between me and thee.
6亞巴郎對撒辣依說：「你的婢女是在你手中；你看怎樣好，就怎樣待她罷！」於是撒辣依就虐待她，她便由撒辣依面前逃跑了。 6And Abram made answer, and said to her: Behold thy handmaid is in thy own hand, use her as it pleaseth thee. And when Sarai afflicted her, she ran away.
7上主的使者在曠野的水泉旁，即在往叔爾道上的水泉旁，遇見了她， 7And the angel of the Lord having found her, by a fountain of water in the wilderness, which is in the way to Sur in the desert,
8對她說：「撒辣依的婢女哈加爾！你從那裡來，要往那裡去？」她答說：「我由我主母撒辣依那裡逃出來的。」 8He said to her: Agar, handmaid of Sarai, whence comest thou? and whither goest thou? And she answered: I flee from the face of Sarai, my mistress.
9上主的使者對她說：「你要回到你主母那裡，屈服在她手下。」 9And the angel of the Lord said to her: Return to thy mistress, and humble thyself under her hand.
10上主的使者又對她說：「我要使你的後裔繁衍，多得不可勝數。」 10And again he said: I will multiply thy seed exceedingly, and it shall not be numbered for multitude.
11上主的使者再對她說：「看，你已懷孕，要生個兒子；要給他起名叫依市瑪耳，因為上主俯聽了你的苦訴。 11And again: Behold, said he, thou art with child, and thou shalt bring forth a son: and thou shalt call his name Ismael, because the Lord hath heard thy affliction.
12他將來為人，像頭野驢；他要反對眾人，眾人也要反對他；他要衝著自己的眾兄弟支搭帳幕。」 12He shall be a wild man: his hand will be against all men, and all men's hands against him: and he shall pitch his tents over against all his brethren.
13哈加爾遂給那對她說話的上主起名叫「你是看顧人的天主」，因為她說：「我不是也看見了那看顧人的天主嗎？」 13And she called the name of the Lord that spoke unto her: Thou the God who hast seen me. For she said: Verily here have I seen the hinder parts of him that seeth me.
14為此她給那井起名叫拉海洛依井。這井是在卡德士與貝勒得之間。 14Therefore she called that well, The well of him that liveth and seeth me. The same is between Cades and Barad.
15哈加爾給亞巴郎生了一個兒子，亞巴郎給哈加爾所生的兒子，起名叫依市瑪耳。 15And Agar brought forth a son to Abram: who called his name Ismael.
16哈加爾給亞巴郎生依市瑪耳時，亞巴郎已八十六歲。 16Abram was four score and six years old when Agar brought him forth Ismael.

16:7-11
「天主的使者」（初见本章内）是指天主自己（16:13; 22:11；出3:2；民2:1），人既然不能见到天主，更不能接近，因为人见了天主必死无疑，因此天主为就和人的软弱，藉天使的形像显现。古人的这种思想表示承认天主的超越性。教父多以为「上主的天使」，是天主的圣言，即要降生成人的圣子。

「野驴」的比喻直指依市玛耳，但也暗示他强悍的後裔阿剌伯人。
