1亞巴郎從那裡遷往乃革布地，定居在卡德士和叔爾之間。當他住在革辣爾時， 1Abraham removed from thence to the south country, and dwelt between Cades and Sur, and sojourned in Gerara.
2亞巴郎一論到他的妻子撒辣就說：「她是我的妹妹。」革辣爾王阿彼默肋客於是派人來取了撒辣去。 2And he said of Sara his wife: She is my sister. So Abimelech the king of Gerara sent, and took her.
3但是夜間，天主在夢中來對阿彼默肋客說：「為了你取來的那個女人你該死，因為她原是有夫之婦。」 3And God came to Abimelech in a dream by night, and he said to him: Lo thou shalt die for the woman thou hast taken: for she hath a husband.
4阿彼默肋客尚未接近她，於是說：「我主！連正義的人你也殺害嗎？ 4Now Abimelech had not touched her, and he said: Lord, wilt thou slay a nation, that is ignorant and just?
5那男人不是對我說過「她是我的妹妹」嗎？連她自己也說「他是我的哥哥。」我做了這事，是出於心正手潔呀！」 5Did not he say to me: She is my sister: and she say, He is my brother? in the simplicity of my heart, and cleanness of my hands have I done this.
6天主在夢中對他說：「我也知道，你是出於心正做了這事，所以我阻止了你犯罪得罪我，也沒有讓你接觸她。 6And God said to him: And I know that thou didst it with a sincere heart: and therefore I withheld thee from sinning against me, and I suffered thee not to touch her.
7現在你應將女人還給那人，因為他是一位先知，他要為你轉求，你才可生存；倘若你不歸還，你該知道：你以及凡屬於你的，必死無疑。」 7Now therefore restore the man his wife, for he is a prophet: and he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live: but if thou wilt not restore her, know that thou shalt surely die, thou and all that are thine.
8阿彼默肋客很早就起來召集了眾臣僕，將全部實情告訴給他們聽；這些人都很害怕。 8And Abimelech forthwith rising up in the night, called all his servants: and spoke all these words in their hearing, and all the men were exceedingly afraid.
9然後阿彼默肋客叫了亞巴郎來，對他說：「你對我們作的是什麼事？我在什麼事上得罪了你，竟給我和我的王國招來了這樣大的罪過？你對我作了不應該作的事。」 9And Abimelech called also for Abraham, and said to him: What hast thou done to us? what have we offended thee in, that thou hast brought upon me and upon my kingdom a great sin? thou hast done to us what thou oughtest not to do.
10阿彼默肋客繼而對亞巴郎說：「你作這事，究有什麼意思？」 10And again he expostulated with him, and said, What sawest thou, that thou hast done this?
11亞巴郎答說：「我以為在這地方一定沒有人敬畏天主，人會為了我妻子的緣故殺害我。 11Abraham answered: I thought with myself, saying: Perhaps there is not the fear of God in this place: and they will kill me for the sake of my wife:
12何況她實在是我的妹妹，雖不是我母親的女兒，卻是我父親的女兒；後來做了我的妻子。 12Howbeit, otherwise also she is truly my sister, the daughter of my father, and not the daughter of my mother, and I took her to wife.
13當天主叫我離開父家，在外飄流的時候，我對她說：我們無論到什麼地方，你要說我是你的哥哥，這就是你待我的大恩。」 13And after God brought me out of my father's house, I said to her: Thou shalt do me this kindness: In every place, to which we shall come, thou shalt say that I am thy brother.
14阿彼默肋客把些牛羊奴婢，送給了亞巴郎，也將他的妻子撒辣歸還了他； 14And Abimelech took sheep and oxen, and servants and handmaids, and gave to Abraham: and restored to him Sara, his wife.
15然後對他說：「看，我的土地盡在你面前，你願住在那裡，就住在那裡。」 15And said: The land is before you, dwell wheresoever it shall please thee.
16繼而對撒辣說：「看，我給了你哥哥一千銀子，作為你在闔家人前的遮羞錢；這樣，各方面無可指摘。」 16And to Sara he said: Behold I have given thy brother a thousand pieces of silver: this shall serve thee for a covering of thy eyes to all that are with thee, and whithersoever thou shalt go: and remember thou wast taken.
17亞巴郎懇求了天主，天主就醫好了阿彼默肋客，他的妻子和他的眾婢女，使她們都能生育， 17And when Abraham prayed, God healed Abimelech and his wife, and his handmaids, and they bore children:
18因為上主為了亞巴郎妻子撒辣的事，關閉了阿彼默肋客家中所有婦女的子宮。 18For the Lord had closed up every womb of the house of Abimelech on account of Sara, Abraham's wife.

20:1-18
本章所记与12:10-20相似，但不能证明这两种记载是一回事。古时既有抢妻杀夫的恶习，亚巴郎遂同撒辣有此约定，好保全性命（13节）。天主藉梦警告或指示世人，常见於本书，如15:12; 28:12; 31:24; 37:5; 40-41。称亚巴郎为先知（7节），说明他是天主与人间的中保，也说明他同天主的密切关系。
20:11-13
同父异母的兄妹结婚的事，亚巴郎时代尚许可，但以後却为法律所禁止（肋18:9-11；申27:22；则22:11）。
20:14-18
王给撒辣的巨款，是为赔偿她名誉的损失。
